Why having a disaster recovery plan is vital for business continuity

Tue, 15 Jun 2021

Being prepared for a disaster situation is something that needs to be at the forefront of your business continuity plan from the outset. As our dependency on IT systems grows by the day, ensuring that your infrastructure is backed up, secured and protected from both internal and external threats is paramount, as whilst we never think that the worst will ever happen to us, it’s better to be prepared than to be caught short-handed. By having a disaster recovery plan in place, you can have peace of mind in knowing that your private and confidential information and business data are protected should you ever be exposed to a huge system failure or external threat.

Why do I need a disaster recovery plan?

Below we have outlined some of the core reasons as to why you should look to implement a disaster recovery plan within your business, especially if this is a contingency that you haven’t yet considered:

Human Error

Forgetting to save important files, incorrect data entry and improper use of hardware are all examples of what errors can fall into this category. More often than not, these mistakes don’t massively affect your business and can be fixed internally, however, there are occasions where failure on this level can lead to the loss of vital business data and documentation. This in turn can create huge problems down the line for when sensitive information has either been lost or leaked to a third party that could potentially damage your business’ reputation.

Hardware failures

Whilst most modern IT hardware is extremely resilient to technical issues, nothing is ever perfect nor immune to failure or external threats. Overheating, unexpected power outages and even natural disasters such as flooding can lead to unexpected hardware failures, in turn leading to huge losses of data for your business. If you don’t have your data backed up on secure servers or via a cloud-based system, then you can end up losing all of this information with no chance of it being recovered.

Cyberattacks

As technology continues to develop and flourish, as do the ways in which they can fall susceptible to cyber-attacks and sabotage from ill-minded third parties. Many of these individuals or ‘hackers’ want to gain access to your sensitive information and business data in order to sell it on via other illegal platforms, or even to just ruin your company’s credibility. A prime example of this was the ‘Sony Entertainment Pictures’ hack of 2014, where around 40GB of sensitive company data was stolen and then posted online for the world to see. Now whilst this is an international brand that is probably targeted each and every day, make no mistake in knowing that your business is also at risk of falling victim to these threats if the proper precautions are not taken.
